56TH ANNUAL CCRA HOUSE TOUR, SUN., OCT.19, 1-5PM
Don't miss the 11 (Rittenhouse Sq - Fitler Sq.) homes  including:  two handsome St. James St. brownstones; two residences designed by distinguished architect and Schuylkill River Development Council founder, John Randolph; an entire floor of a former office bldg, now a stunning open-floor-plan residence with a real Tony Award (for the 2012 revival of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"); and an insider's look at the painstaking historic renovations of a magnificent Delancey Street mansion with the contractor and architect on hand to answer questions.  We are grateful to tour sponsors:  AMC Delancey, Allan Domb Real Estate, Clemens Construction, Dranoff Properties, and Robin Apartments.

The self-guided tour begins at tour day ticket sale locations: Trinity Center for Urban Life, 2212 Spruce Street in Fitler Square or Beth Zion Beth Israel (BZBI) at 18th & Spruce Streets (½ block from Rittenhouse Square).  Participants receive a booklet with house descriptions, and route map  and a 15% food discount at neighborhood restaurants:  Audrey Claire, Friday Saturday Sunday, Square 1682,  El Rey, and Twenty Manning Grill. Tickets are only $30. All proceeds support CCRA's mission: "to preserve, enhance, and celebrate urban living."

ARTIST SELECTED TO DESIGN 22ND AND MARKET MEMORIAL
The effort to build a memorial park on the site where six people were tragically killed in the collapse of the Salvation Army thrift store on June 5, 2013 moved a step forward with the selection of Barbara Fox to design the center piece, a memorial sculpture.  Fox, a 1988 graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, will now join a team headed by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society to design and complete the park.  As for her winning concept, Fox says she wanted the families to be able to personalize the memorial for themselves. "My idea was to have windows in a house-shaped piece, and each victim's family could customize how the window would look so that it would mean something to them, like the color of the glass or the texture of the glass. The name of each of the six victims would be etched into the granite over each window. Then, there would be a seventh window for individuals who were injured in the collapse. Above that window it would say 'for those we remember'. "

Although the Salvation Army donated the land for the park to the City, the 22nd and Market Memorial Committee, on which CCRA sits as an observer, has been conducting a fund-raising campaign to generate the money to pay for construction, estimated to cost about $600,000.  About $220,000 has been either collected or pledged to date.  There also have been a number of gifts-in-kind that have been pledged.  Those wishing to contribute to the park construction are asked to visit  www.pennhort.net/memorial. For more information about Fox and the design competition click here.

Hidden Treasures at the Rosenbach, WED, 11/7, 6:30PM, CITY INST. LIBRARY, 19TH & LOCUST
The Rosenbach Museum & Library has made front page headlines more than once this year. First, there was a merger with the Free Library Foundation (not to be confused with the city operated Free Library) and a name change to the Rosenbach of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Then there was the recent return of the Maurice Sendak collection. What rare and fascinating treasures remain on Delancey Place, and what will you find as you go through the house? Derick Dreher, the director of the Rosenbach, will be speaking at the Branch Library. He will tell you about this neighborhood gem which is visited by scholars, neighbors and visitors from around the world. The program is presented by the Friends of PCI Library.
