CCRA Board Agrees to Reopen Garden on Conditions

Our last newsletter reported the  Board's decision to close the 25th and Locust Street Community Garden because  dangerous construction debris was falling into garden plots from the adjacent job site at One Riverside.

At a June 20 special board meeting attended by One Riverside's developer, Dranoff Properties, and its contractor, INTECH Construction, to which Community Garden leaseholders were invited, the Association authorized a Board taskforce to open the Garden under the following conditions:

  1. INTECH's  installation of a fence with two gates north of the hedge bordering the main path leading from the 25th Street gate.
  2. INTECH's agreement to lock and unlock the interior fence gates at the beginning and end of its 7 to 3:30 work day so that gardeners in the northern sector could tend their plots during non work hours.
  3. The non fenced in areas of the garden should be open 24 hrs a day seven days a week.
  4. INTECH's addition of  CCRA, the gardeners and the Garden's supervisory body, the Garden Steering Committee, to its insurance policy as additional insureds.
  5. INTECH'S  receipt of a letter from its insurer's consultants, the Graham Company, regarding the safety merits of these measures.
  6. A letter from the Association's counsel, Stanley Krakower, Esq.,authorizing the reopening of the Garden.
 As of today, June 23:
  1. INTECH has installed the fence BUT the two gates have yet to be inserted.
  2. INTECH is reviewing a proposal from CCRA's lawyer regarding additional insured coverage.
  3. INTECH has received a Graham Company letter found to be acceptable to CCRA's counsel.
  4. INTECH has agreed to open and close the gates once they arrive.

Art Exhibition at Twenty-Two Gallery: "Illusory Display" By Joann Doneen,  Now thru, Fri, 7/1, 236 S. 22nd St.

Illusory Display Oil  marble dust 30 in. x 30 in.

"The paintings in this exhibition explore 'place'.....and our inner knowing of experience. When we intimately engage our visual experience, how solid does the world appear? The fleeting expression, of place, even in its exquisite vividness, somehow carries a feeling tone of transparency. What do we know of now, or its value? The process of painting, making marks on a surface, the paint, the materials, the tools, together with movement and touch, become a personal visual journey, a seeking to know. As the paintings for this exhibition progressed, I found the 'floating Image' and the attention to 'edge', or 'where things meet', to be a reoccurring theme or motif."  -  Joann Doneen

Help Improve Center City with Street Trees

Do you have a place in front of your home or business that would be suitable for a street tree? Use the Parks and Recreation Department's Tree Maintenance Citizen Service Request Form to request that a new or replacement tree be planted in the sidewalk in front of your property. The trees are free, but the properties' owners must request them.

Upon receipt of your request, the city will schedule an inspector to verify that the location is suitable for a street tree, e.g. that the sidewalk is wide enough, and that it doesn't interfere with any signs or traffic signals. If it is suitable, your address will be put on the city's list of locations scheduled for street tree installation.

Be patient. It may take anywhere from 1 to 2 years for installation, but the sooner you get on the city's list, the sooner you'll have a tree.
