The 76ers, 86’d
While not for nothing is a
newspaper’s sports section known as the Toy Department, at the same time
sports can frequently be a metaphor for life.
And so what is one to make of the fact that the Sixers’ season is now over, having fallen to a lesser-talented team?
We believe we speak for the many when we ask, with all due respect:
· Are you &%$#-ing kidding me?
· What the &%$# was that?
We’ll hang up and listen.

Clean Sidewalks are Beautiful, but Not Free: Please Donate
|
Center City is one of the cleanest
neighborhoods in the City, and it’s no accident, nor is it free. CCRA
has a contract with the Center City District to clean local sidewalks
after weekly trash collection. This effort is not covered by membership,
which is where you come in. You are encouraged to donate your fair
share to CCRA’s Clean, Safe & Green program, and you can do so here.

|
Not Your Imagination: It’s Trashier
If trash seems less-picked-up than
usual, you’re right. For the past two months, the City’s Sanitation
Dept. has been working on delays. Three reasons are given: increased
volume (up 30%), the pandemic, and staffing issues. Residents are urged
to call 311 if trash is not removed within 48 hours.

CCRA is proud to manage the Schuylkill River Park Community
The
Schuylkill River Park Community Garden is one of the 130 Philadelphia
community gardens that contributes generously to the Pennsylvania
Horticultural Society’s City Harvest Initiative. So far this season, our
garden is off to a robust start. To date, its donation of 98 pounds of
organically grown produce have gone to feed neighbors in need at the
Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square. Thanks to the
organizational skills and green thumb of Linda Zaimis, the community
gardeners donated a total of 1,106 pounds last summer. With optimal
weather conditions and a little luck, the gardeners aim to break their
all-time record of 1,550 pounds set in 2019. The goal of the initiative
is to “address food insecurity, so if we have many gardens in each
neighborhood, and they’re all distributing to different places, then
we’re reaching thousands of people,” said Jasmine Thompson, a PHS
community garden specialist. Find more information about the Schuylkill
River Park Community Garden here.

110 Years Young and Going Strong: The Wanamaker Organ
|
The venerable Wanamaker Organ, located in the 5-story Grand Court at the Center City Macy’s, celebrates a very happy 110th
birthday this month. If you can believe it, since 1911 the organ has
been played twice a day, every day. That’s through two pandemics, two
world wars, the Great Depression, and on and on. For more on this
remarkable treasure, go here.
