Crosstown Support for Those Who Appealed Realty Assessments

After a unanimous vote to request that  interest and penalties be tolled for those who appeal their realty tax assessments, the Philadelphia Crosstown Coalition (a federation of 31 civic associations of which CCRA is a charter member) has mobilized to support Bill 171009.

This Bill  reenacts the protections created 5 years ago by Bill 130308 A, which dealt with appeals from  AVI, the 2013  Actual Value Initiative which reassessed all properties in the City.  The Bill protects  taxpayers whose properties had been incorrectly  assessed while assuring that properly assessed properties  paid their fair share by suspending penalties and interest for taxpayers who (1) appealed their reassessments (2) timely paid their tax as computed on the prior assessment and  (3)  timely paid the assessment determined  via the appeal process.
Help Keep Our Sidewalks Clean

Each year CCRA uses Neighborhood Beautification contributions to fund a $29,000 contract with the  Center City District for sidewalk cleaning after each weekly trash collection and further to finance our other aesthetic initiatives - tree planting, historic preservation, the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden.  We would be grateful if you could contribute a charitable donation to help cover the costs. Click or tap here  to donate.  If you have already contributed, thank you very much for your generous support.
Fire at the Dorchester

Earlier this week, there was an apartment fire at the Dorchester Condominiums located on Rittenhouse Square.  According to the Fire Marshal, the cause of the fire is still under investigation and a firefighter was injured. CCRA has expressed its sincere gratitude to the Philadelphia firefighters who successfully battled a recent fire on the 29th floor of the Dorchester.  Our firefighters put their lives on the line daily for our health and safety.  Please remember them in your thoughts.
LinkPHL Is Coming
Have you noticed the kiosks being built around Center City? It's called "LinkPHL" and is currently rolling out in Philadelphia, with the first Links installed on Market Street. Link Wi-Fi is free, super fast, and secure.  These kiosks can be used from charging your USB devices to making phone calls. For more information, click or tap here.
News from the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden

For 10 years the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden has participated in the PHS' City Harvest Program to provide fresh produce to local food cupboards and homeless shelters. Three times a month our veggies are taken to The Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion for distribution and many times throughout the month to St. John's Hospice for meals for the homeless. With space in the garden dedicated to the City Harvest program as well as more than 30 individual gardeners' volunteering a spot in their plot for C.H. produce, this year we were able to donate 1,164 pounds of fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit.

As part of its mission to make our neighborhood a better place to live, work and play, CCRA administers the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden (SRPCG) on behalf of the City of Philadelphia.  SRPCG is operated by a Steering Committee, which is charged with a myriad of functions involving management of the garden, plot assignments, and care of all garden equipment.  For more information, go to SRPCG.
Zoning Meeting Updates

Since the next zoning meeting was scheduled on Christmas Day, Tuesday, 12/25, it has been canceled.  The committee will meet on Tuesday, 1/22/19, 7pm, at Brandywine BEX, 2 Commerce Sq, (2005 Market St).

Dear Neighborhood Residents and Business Owners,

In conjunction with Philadelphia’s Vision Zero initiative, the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS) has announced a plan to implement pedestrian safety improvements and traffic calming through a program called Neighborhood Slow Zones. The goal of the Neighborhood Slow Zones program is to implement neighborhood-wide safety measures, as opposed to the current block-by-block type of improvements the city currently works on.

Neighborhood organizations like ours can apply, and SOSNA’s Safety Committee is spearheading an application for part of our neighborhood, per the guidelines which have specific requirements about what types of streets can be included. We are proposing a Neighborhood Slow Zone bounded by:
  • Grays Ferry Avenue to the west;
  • South Street to the north;
  • 19th Street to the east;
  • Christian Street to the south
If selected, the Neighborhood Slow Zone Program will:
  • Work with neighbors to develop a plan for traffic calming that responds to critical safety issues;
  • Lower speed limits to 20MPH;
  • Install traffic-calming measures (including possibly speed cushions and other options).
Applications are due January 18, 2019 and we are seeking to hear from the community about the important safety issues they would like the Neighborhood Slow Zone to address. In addition, we are seeking letters of support from residents, community stakeholders, and business owners to supplement our application.

Please join us for this informational meeting on Thursday, December 13th at 7pm at the SOSNA office at 1901 Christian Street, and please share with and invite your block/neighbors. If you cannot make the meeting, please contact me to share your ideas and hear ours, and to offer your support for solutions.

We look forward to seeing you on the 13th,

Tanya Seaman / Chair, SOSNA Safety Committee
