CCRA's testimony at the Public Safety Hearing on ATVs

Yesterday, Board member Dawn Willis represented CCRA at the Public Safety Hearing examining the ongoing safety and noise issues created by ATVs and other unauthorized vehicles on City streets and the possibility of creating a space for safely riding in Philadelphia (Resolution No. 200442).

CCRA shared the concerns from the members with the councilmembers. CCRA feels that they did listen to us, however there are no short-term solutions for this ongoing problem.

CBS 3 covered this issue yesterday.

If you hear sirens tonight, don't be alarmed

Tonight at 7:30pm, fire apparatus sirens will sound throughout the city to indicate the start of the citywide fire drill. Philadelphians are urged to participate by putting their home escape plans to the test. Homes should have smoke alarms installed on every level, including the basement. If you need a smoke alarm, call 311 and the fire department will come install one for free.

Halloween Celebration Changes

Due to the pandemic Friends of Filter Square Park has canceled their annual Pumpkin Hunt. The event draws a large crowd each year and they cannot keep children safely socially distanced while they gather the pumpkins. They will still decorate the fountain for Halloween and, in their fall newsletter, encourage families to post pictures to Instagram at #FrightatFitlerSquare.

Also, SOSNA will not be doing any Halloween or fall-related activities this year due to COVID. They believe that it is still too unsafe to sanction any form of gathering, etc.

Extend Outdoor Dining Thru 2021? City Council Says “Yes, Please”

Outdoor dining has been a lifeline to eateries looking to survive the pandemic. But the rule changes to enable outdoor dining are set to expire in December; what then? Not to worry, says City Council. The Council has introduced two bills that would extend outdoor dining for an additional twelve months.

Parking Spaces Disappear, No One Complains. What?

One of the many unexpected side-effects of the pandemic has been the ‘streetery’, whereby streets (and parking spaces) are converted to eateries. The subtraction of parking spaces would figure to anger local residents, but curiously that hasn’t happened. Where’s the outrage?

A message from the Garces Foundation:

As businesses shuttered and illness spread across the country, we saw immigrants lose their jobs, and with that, their security, in a matter of weeks. 97% of the people we serve, primarily restaurant workers, are unemployed and searching for work. In response, we created the Garces Foundation Food Pantry. In partnership with local restaurants, we are providing boxes of food to support our local community. Since March, every week 800 immigrants have received a box of healthy and fresh food. With help from our community partners, team of volunteers, and donors, we have provided 4,739 boxes of food. Your contribution ensures that the Philadelphia region's vulnerable immigrant workers will continue to have enough food in 2020. Please consider supporting this important new program, which provides one week of food to a family in need. Donate by mail to Garces Foundation, 1901 S 9th Street, Suite #205, Philadelphia, 19148 or  visit here.
