Trash Talk, Talkin’ Trash
Parents (and children) of a certain
age will recall the Sesame Street character Oscar the Grouch, who lived
in a trash can and whose signature song was “I Love Trash."
That was all cute and lovable and
adorable, but pardon us if we’re a bit grouchy ourselves about the
subject of trash around here. We understand that more than a few urban
ills seem intractable, nor has the pandemic helped, but… Picking up the
trash in a timely fashion? Pardon the pun, but that’s too heavy a lift?
To their credit, last week a number of
fed-up residents brought bags of trash from their own neighborhoods to
the Municipal Services Building in protest. And yes, there’s even an app
for this called “Glitter," which pays residents to clean up their neighborhoods through corporate sponsorships.
These grass-roots efforts are
admirable, but Bottom Line it’s the City’s responsibility here. This
trash problem needs to go, along with the unfunny sobriquet
“Filthadelphia."
So, people: COMPLAIN. Loudly, and Often.
