#MemorialDaySalute

And so, Memorial Day.

A three-day weekend, the unofficial start to summer and, of course, a time for memorializing those who gave their lives in defense of America.

Feels a little different this time around, doesn’t it? So maybe this year let’s also soberly honor those science and medicine people who defended us against the Coronavirus and, most notably, the far, far, far too many who so tragically lost their lives in the battle.

So for all of the above: A Memorial Day Salute.

Got Cicadas? Not… Quite… Yet.
Coming Soon: Because lanternflies aren’t enough, we will now shortly have cicadas to ponder. But not just any kind of cicadas; oh no, we’re talking Brood X cicadas here.

Highlights: they appear every 17 years, are black and orange with red legs and red eyes, and the males emit a distinct and loud hiss in order to attract a mate.
No-Glue SLF Traps and Alternatives
Management of the invasive Spotted Lantern Fly is important, but glue traps harm other wildlife, like birds, bats, and squirrels. Here are some no-glue trap ideas from Lehigh Valley Audubon Society.

Restaurant Assn.: 20% of PA restaurants have closed permanently
It’s a bad number that could have been far worse: According to the National Restaurant Association, 20% of Pennsylvania restaurants have closed permanently. Plenty bad, but at the height of the pandemic, industry experts were predicting 30%, or even 75%. A big help: state and federal grants.
Conde Nast: Philly eatery one of the Best New Restaurants In The World
Good luck getting a reservation, but Kensington’s new Laser Wolf restaurant has been named by Conde Nast as one of the best new eateries in the world. A skewer house concept from Michael Solomonov of Zahav fame, Laser Wolf serves meats, vegetables and fish alongside hummus and salatim.
When is a cheesesteak not a cheesesteak?
The answer is obvious: When it’s 500 feet long. Such was the conundrum facing the gastronomes behind the birthday celebration for Rim Café owner Rene Kobeitri which took the form of an attempt to break the Guinness Book record for world’s largest cheesesteak. As usual, the disagreement broke down along purist vs. non-purist lines. The delicious details can be found here.
