 OPENBOX ATHLETICS
SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS
OpenBox Athletics was founded in 2017 with a goal of providing access to healthy lifestyle options for our community. As we grew, we created a community outreach arm in order to go beyond the classes that we offered within our walls to create fitness options accessible to all. The goal was to reduce or remove the barrier to entry to aid our community that may be dealing with health-related illness but not know where to start from a physical perspective. While ideally broad reaching, the target has been to connect with the surrounding black communities of Philadelphia which are typically hardest hit by systemic inequalities which lead to reduced health outcomes. Throughout the pandemic, we have offered Community Fitness classes for free; we recognized early in the lockdown that people were being more sedentary which can lead to a diminished immune system as well as onset of depression.

Our next initiative involves providing free memberships to nominated and qualified members of our community. We are working with local organizations and groups to accept nominations for individuals who seek to raise our communities and whom could benefit from direction as it pertained to a healthy lifestyle. Through creating awareness and access, we hope to increase the perception of how a healthy lifestyle can benefit long term health prognosis and life enjoyment.

In seeking nominations, we are looking for the following:
  • Nominee’s name and contact information
  • Name and contact information for the submitting individual
  • Background on relationship with the nominee
  • How the nominee would benefit from the OBA CF Membership
  • How the nominee would benefit the community by having access to an OBA CF Membership
We will accept nominations from now through Friday, November 27th . All nominations can be sent to contact@openboxathletics.com and manager@openboxathletics.com

 HOSTS FOR HOSPITALS
During the time of the pandemic, patient-families are in urgent need of private-setting lodging. Please let us know if you or anyone you know may have some type of private housing to offer at any time now through next winter: e.g., AirBnBs, carriage houses, in-law suites, corporate apartments, vacant homes or apartments, places of people becoming ‘snowbirds’.

HOSTS for HOSPITALS continues the call to help build their network of safe, socially-distant housing for patient-families coming to Greater Philadelphia for medical care.

Request water bill assistance before shutoffs restart in 2021

The Philadelphia Water Department and PhilaRevenue took the bold step of extending COVID-19 emergency water-protection measures. That means residential and commercial water customers won’t be shut off until April 1, 2021 –even in the case non-payments. However, if you’re not paying your water bill, your balance will continue to grow and become harder to manage once shutoffs restart. Get ahead of the problem by applying for water bill help today: www.phila.gov/water-bill-help. A loss of income during the pandemic may qualify you for special assistance.

SUPPORT MARIAN ANDERSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Our neighborhood's beloved Marian Anderson Museum & Historical Society suffered from flooding in the basement of the Museum and is working to repair and cover the cost of the damage.  In addition, the Historical Society and Museum has been closed due to COVID and unable to receive any support loans or grants to subsidize their ongoing operational costs.
