A MESSAGE FROM SOUTH OF SOUTH NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
ASSISTANCE FOR RENTERS
The City of Philadelphia is helping renters stay in their homes. One way is by offering emergency rental assistance to renters who have lost income due to COVID-19. Rental assistance helps landlords too.

SPOTTED LANTERN FLY

Good news on the Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF):

The results of this study suggested that biopesticides containing Beauveria bassiana — a native soilborne fungus that attacks insects but is not harmful to birds and mammals, including humans — were effective in reducing spotted lanternfly populations.

In the meantime, the Lantern Fly is still a destructive invasive pest threatening agricultural and ornamental plant and people are manage SLF populations by:
  • Stop the spread of SLF by checking your car and any outdoor equipment (grills, mowers, firewood, etc.) when going in and out of the quarantine zone.
  • Manage SLF on your property by scraping and destroying eggs, carefully using bands or traps on trees, removing preferred hosts, and using registered insecticides (or squishing) for control when appropriate.

SUPPORT THE MARIAN ANDERSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM
Our neighborhood's beloved Marian Anderson Museum & Historical Society  has recently suffered from flooding in the basement of the Museum and is working to repair and cover the cost of the damage. This is estimated to be between $3,000-5,000 in costs.

In addition, the Historical Society and Museum has been closed due to COVID and unable to receive any support loans or grants to subsidize their ongoing operational costs of about $12,000 since closing in March.

Today, we're helping Jillian of the Museum to fundraise the costs incurred over the COVID-19 period including the cost of the damage to the basement.

RENAME TANEY STREET

Taney’s decision in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case is one of the most racist and offensive decisions this country has ever experienced. That is why it is about time to take Taney’s name off our street signs and replace it with someone who we can be proud of!

#MaskUpPHL
UPDATE: On June 26, Mayor Jim Kenney and Health Commissioner Dr. Tom Farley signed an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Philadelphia.
In addition to staying at home, practicing social distancing, and washing your hands thoroughly, wearing a mask in public is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others around you from COVID-19. Many people are making their own masks for themselves and others with what they have available at home. Here are some tips to make sure you know why, when, and how to properly use a mask. LEARN MORE
