15th & Locust Shooting Incident
Captain Convery, of the 9th district, came in person to speak at last week's Rittenhouse Nuisance Taskforce. The shooting was an outgrowth of drug trade in that area. The shooter was either trying to rob the victims or to encourage them to relocate their business. The police have a suspect, though not in custody. Without going into details (because that would defeat the purpose), police presence is being significantly stepped up in the area to stamp out the trade in unlicensed pharmaceuticals. We are grateful to Captain Convery for his personal attention on this.
If you see something going on in the vicinity of 15th & Locust Sts., call 911 and report it. This needs to stop now. Your 911 calls are a part of the solution.

Word from L&I reports that the front facade of the burned building is to be salvaged while the rear will have to be completely rebuilt from the ground up.

Wanted: Board Member Nominations
The Nominating Committee of the Board of the Center City Residents' Association is seeking nominations to fill a number of Board seats for the Association's fiscal year beginning on July 1, 2011. New Board members will generally serve a term of 3 years.
The Board is a working Board. We are seeking energetic individuals who have a passion for living in our residential district; are interested in issues of quality of life and community service; and are committed to active participation on the Board, including actively serving on at least one committee (e.g., Membership, Fund Raising, Newsletter, Zoning, Finance, Streets, Long-Range Planning, Historic Preservation). Consistent with the foregoing, all candidates must pledge to devote a minimum of four (4) hours per month on CCRA activities, not including time spent attending, and preparing for, monthly Board meetings.
While CCRA membership is open to any individual, corporation, or organization, Board members are restricted by CCRA By-Laws to resident members who live within our geographic borders (i.e., the area of JFK Boulevard south to South Street, and Broad Street west to Schuylkill River). Members are encouraged to forward a resume or summary of qualifications before March 1 of any individual who is interested in serving (which could be yourself), to the Nominating Committee Chair: Jeffrey L. Local Merchant Spotlight: Photo Lounge
It is the intention of this writer to include in this spot a brief note celebrating a local merchant every week. If you know of a local business - CCRA sponsor or not - that has gone above and beyond, let's celebrate them. The emphasis here is on local. This week, in the exercise of Presidential prerogative, I want to draw your attention to PhotoLounge at 1909 Chestnut (full disclosure: they are a sponsor), which prints photos, develops film and supplies photo-related goods. Before Christmas, a snafu prevented me from picking up a canvas photoprint that was a gift for my dad before we left for Charlottesville. I emailed the owner, Ravid (using the form on the website) that night. Ravid responded promptly on a weekend when he was closed & shipped the photo to Charlottesville so that we could give Dad a timely Xmas present. New Card for CCRA Members Di Bruno Bros. Discount Program
Di Bruno Bros. has been a long time avid supporter of CCRA. Aside from donating gift cards and the wonderful hors d'oeuvres and desserts for our Celebration of Center City Living events (April 20 this year), Di Bruno's gives CCRA members a 10% discount on purchases from their Rittenhouse (1730 Chestnut St.) and Comcast (1701 JFK Blvd.) locations. As of Feb. 1, there is a new "CCRA Friends of Di Bruno Bros." card (the old one expired on Jan. 31). To get yours, present your old card to the cashier and give him/her your name. The cashier will check it against a list of current members and issue you the new card. One of the best ways to get educated about what the primary candidates stand for is to attend the March 9, 2016 debate where all 5 primary candidates (Brian Sims is the incumbent; Ben Waxman, Aide to PA Sen. Vince Hughes; Marni Snyder, a local criminal defense and special education law attorney; and Lou Lanni, realtor and real estate investor) for the 182nd District of the PA House of Representatives' seat will be participating. CCRA residents are located within the 182nd District, so this is YOUR Representative for the PA House that's being elected. The Moderator will be Chris Brennan, Political Writer for the Phila. Inquirer. (venue subject to change).

Zoning Remapping Public Meeting, Wed., 3/23, 7-9PM, Trinity Memorial, 22nd & Spruce St.
Philadelphia got a new zoning code a few years back. Unlike most cities, Philadelphia did not re-do the zoning map concurrently. For several months, a CCRA task force has been reviewing suggested zoning remappings from the planning committee and coming up with some of its own. Proposed revisions to zoning in the area bounded by South St., the Schuylkill, Spruce St. and 20th St. will be presented on March 23, 2015 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Trinity Memorial to receive comments and suggestions from neighbors. All are welcome.

"SCHOOL DAZE:" CCRA'S Panel Discussion on what to Look for in an Elementary School, Wed, 3/16,

CCRA will hold a program on choosing the right elementary school for your Center City child. This program will include brief presentations by three panelists, Martha Benoff, Ph.D., licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist, Eileen Dwell, retired Philadelphia and suburban school principal, and Susan Souffie, rising kindergarten parent. Following their presentations there will be a question and answer period followed by refreshment time to mingle with other parents. Water Department Seeks 12% Rate Hike
Bills would go up, on average, 12% over the next two years. If you are concerned about your water bill, the quality of your water or why the water department has a rate stabilization fund, please testify at one of the hearings or send your testimony in. If you have ideas that would save money, like combining the Water and Gas works meter reading and billing or ideas that would make the Water Department more efficient, please share them. All-City High School Music Festival: Tues., 3/1, 7:30 PM, Kimmel Center, Broad and Spruce St
The All-City High School Musical Festival will be held
at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The All-City Orchestra, Choir, and Band will perform the world premiere of Philadelphia-based composer John B Hedges's Promise of a City, commissioned especially for the event by Joseph Conyers, assistant principal bass of The Philadelphia Orchestra, music director of the All-City Orchestra. Over 400 students hailing from more than 30 public high schools throughout the city will participate in the concert. This concert is free and open to the public but tickets are required and are currently available for reservation on philorch.org

Prom Dress Donations Needed: Help Make A Night Special
Jewish Family and Children's Services is collecting gently used prom dresses, tuxedos, suits, shoes, and handbags for a prom dress sale on Saturday, March 12. The event will benefit the ELECT and Child Welfare Programs, and is also open to Philadelphia area high school students with a school ID. The sale has become an annual event, with hairdressers, makeup artists and stylists on hand to help shoppers put together the perfect look.
All dress sizes, styles, colors and lengths are gratefully accepted, but there is a particular need for size 14 and up. Items will be collected through Tuesday, March 1.

Acad of Vocal Arts Returns to Phila City Ins Library with an Evening of Opera...and more: Wed, 3/2, 6:30 pm, 1905 Locust St
The Friends of PCI will be sponsoring another program by the AVA. This year's performers will be Alexandra Nowakowski, a soprano, and Matthew White, a tenor with Luke Housner, accompanying them on piano. They will perform a concert of favorite arias and duets from opera, operetta and classic Broadway. This program is free and will be held in the lower level meeting room. Unfortunately there isn't an elevator in the library.

Celebrating its 70th Anniversary, the
Limón Dance Company
(LDC) performs three masterpieces by legendary choreographer José Limón.
At the vanguard of American Modern Dance, LDC was founded by José Limón and Doris Humphrey (American dance pioneer). LDC is known worldwide for its dramatic expression, technical mastery and humanistic approaches. The program includes Mazurkas (1958), The Moor's Pavane (1949) and The Winged (1966). Mazurkas set to Chopin's music, is dedicated to the relentless spirit of the Polish people facing annihilation at the end of WW II. Limón's most famous dance, The Moor's Pavane, based on Shakespeare's Othello, captures the drama and passion of a timeless tale of love, jealousy andbetrayal. The Winged is a fanciful look at our feathered friends - real imagined and mythical.
Performances take place Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30pm; Thursday, March 10 at 7:30pm; Friday, March 11 at 8pm; Saturday, March 12 at 2pm and 8pm; and Sunday, March 13 at 3pm.
