Recently, we have seen an influx of crime, including armed robberies, in and around our neighborhood. Please take a moment to read through the SOSNA Safety Committee Crime Update & Tips Page. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in the evening, and report all suspicious activity to 911. The police need residents to report all incidents to properly track and stop crime in our neighborhood. Also, at the January Police Community Meeting (PSA-1), we learned that bike thefts in the neighborhood are way up. We urge all bike owners to lock their bikes securely (use two or more locks to deter theft) even if they're stored in your backyard, and register your bike online with the 17th Police District! Register your bike online here.
On a lighter note, the SOSNA Community Impact Committee is holding a SOSNA Social this Thursday, February 5th at the Sidecar Bar & Grille! Bring a friend, or just bring yourself, to meet your neighbors for Happy Hour (5-7pm). The committee is also collecting childrens winter wear (hats, gloves, scarves and coats) for students at our two great neighborhood elementary schools. Help us keep our kids warm in this freezing weather; bring an item of warm childrens' clothing to the SOSNA Social or to the SOSNA office at any time!
There are big plans for youth baseball in our neighborhood! The Marian Anderson Rec Center will soon see the addition of the Urban Youth Academy, a 7,333 SF indoor practice space! The City of Philadelphia is currently looking for qualified artists to design and install site-specific artwork when the project is complete. To see conceptual plans for the space and read through the RFQ, click here. There will be a community meeting at Marian Anderson on Monday, February 9th at 7pm to discuss the program, the new building and the art installation with the neighborhood. Lastly, registration is now open for 2015 Taney Spring Baseball, Softball, Tee-Ball, and Pee Wee! This year, the girls' softball program has expanded to include two age groups. Register your children today, the early bird discount ends February 10th!
Come meet your neighbors at the second SOSNA SOCIAL! This happy hour, hosted by the SOSNA Community Impact Committee and our friends at The Sidecar Bar & Grille, will take place Thursday, February 5th from 5pm-7pm. What are SOSNA Socials exactly? They are nothing more than a great opportunity to bring neighbors and friends together to celebrate our special community.
SOSNA has extended the Warm & Cozy Winter Drive! We have a few more months of winter, and we want to make sure neighborhood kids have all of the clothes they need to stay warm until spring! Drop off new hats, gloves, scarves and coats at the SOSNA Office (1901 Christian Street) for kindergarten through 8th grade students at the Arthur and Stanton Elementary Schools.
Please join Philadelphia Parks and Rec, and the Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy for a community meeting to discuss the plans for the new addition to the Marian Anderson Recreation Center. The addition will be the indoor training space for the Urban Youth Academy and, upon completion, will be the site of a large mural.
